London is a truly cosmopolitan city and as England's capital, features many of the country's most noteworthy festivals and fiestas. Many outdoor concerts and live entertainment also take place at many of London's most central locations, including Hyde Park. Popular festivals in London include the following events.
Annual London Festivals
January: London International Boat Show, the largest boat show in the whole of Europe, held at the Earl's Court Exhibition Centre
April: London Marathon, taking place during the middle of the month, attracting around 30,000 runners and enormous crowds, which line the entire route, finishing close to Buckingham Palace
May: Chelsea Flower Show, the world's largest flower show, held at the end of the month in the Chelsea area of London
June: Wimbledon, a famous lawn tennis championship, which has become a particularly prestigious sporting event, with many famous international player competing for the title
June: Trooping the Colour, elaborate Horse Guards Parade on the sovereigns official birthday, attended by the queen
July to September: The Proms, featuring numerous classical concerts, with large orchestras and crowds
August: Notting Hill Carnival, the largest street party in the whole of Europe, taking place over three days at the end of the month
October: Opening of Parliament, held on the first Monday of the month, when the monarch arrives by royal coach to open parliament in the House of Lords
November: Fireworks Night, bonfires and spectacular fireworks displays, remembering when Guy Fawkes plotted to blow up London's famous Houses of Parliament
December: New Year's Eve Celebrations, with many parties and celebrations throughout London, including large crowds which gather around Trafalgar Square at midnight
